LITERACY CHANGES LIVES

The Literacy Crisis
in the USA

I am deeply concerned about the adult literacy crisis in the United States. Currently, 130 million adults—54% of those aged 16 to 74—read below a sixth-grade level. Over 48 million struggle with basic reading, writing, and math skills above a third-grade level. This crisis has significant economic consequences, with estimates suggesting that improving literacy rates could add $2.2 trillion to the national income and prevent a $1.4 trillion loss in GDP.

Beyond economics, low literacy affects nearly every aspect of life. Approximately 75% of incarcerated individuals did not complete high school or have low literacy skills. Healthcare costs are also impacted, with annual losses ranging from $106 to $238 billion due to inadequate literacy skills.

Addressing this issue is critical. Expanding access to adult education and literacy programs will empower individuals, strengthen communities, and support the overall well-being of our country. (Sources: Barbara Bush Foundation, ProLiteracy, COABE)
